Surname Entry

Nazarbayev

Nazarbayev is a Kazakh family name derived from Nazarbay, with a Russian-style surname ending indicating family association or descent.

Nazarbayev is a Kazakh surname formed from the male personal name Nazarbay (Назарбай) and the Russian surname suffix -ev (-ев). Its most useful explanation is “of the family of Nazarbay,” conventionally understood as descent from someone with that name. The personal name contains an Arabic-derived element, Nazar, and Kazakh bay, associated with wealth or abundance. It does not follow that a bearer has Arab or Russian ancestry, or belongs to one particular Nazarbayev family. See Alois Nazarov’s surname analysis.

What Does Nazarbay Mean?

T. Zhanuzak’s Reference Book of Kazakh Personal Names explains Nazar through Arabic naẓar, with senses involving looking, regard, and attention; it also gives figurative associations with help and goodwill. This is evidence for the personal-name element, rather than a complete translation of the surname. Read the Nazar entry, reproduced by Sozdikqor.

Nazarov analyses Nazarbay as Nazar + bay and connects bay with Kazakh бай, “rich” or “abundant.” His discussion cites T. Dzhanuzakov’s 1989 work on names. This explains the components without establishing a single literal phrase such as “rich gaze,” or proving that the ancestor was wealthy. The immediate source of the surname is the whole personal name Nazarbay, not an occupation or a place. See the component analysis.

The distinction matters when reading a family document: a person called Nazarbay may be using a given name. That occurrence alone does not show that his children inherited the surname Nazarbayev.

A Kazakh Name with a Russian Surname Ending

The Cyrillic surname is Назарбаев. The spelling Nazarbayev represents the surname as a whole; it should not be reconstructed by simply appending English ev to Nazarbay.

Ivar Utne’s University of Bergen guide describes Kazakh surnames formed from personal names with Russian endings -ov, -ev, -in, and corresponding feminine endings -ova, -eva, -ina. It also explains why -ev appears as -yev or -jev in different transcription systems. See Utne’s sections on surnames and transcription.

Ivanov offers a comparison for the use of a Russian possessive surname formation. It is a structural comparison, not a variant of Nazarbayev or evidence of kinship. A borrowed surname ending can coexist with a Kazakh personal-name base.

Gulmira Madieva and Roza Tayeva describe twentieth-century Kazakh naming through the Russian three-part model of given name, patronymic, and surname. They distinguish it from older identifying traditions and discuss alternative Kazakh naming forms in the period 1990–2012. Their study supplies historical context, not a date when every Nazarbayev household adopted its name. See their 2014 study, pp. 4799–4801.

One Family Example, Not a Universal Founder

The official biography of Nursultan Nazarbayev identifies his father as Abish Nazarbayev, born in 1903, and Abish’s father as Nazarbay. This illustrates how an ancestor’s personal name can stand behind the surname used by later generations. See the official biography’s childhood section.

This is a retrospective account published by the subject’s own office, not a contemporary birth register or an independent reconstruction of all Nazarbayev lines. In particular, Abish’s birth year does not establish that the surname was registered in exactly that form in 1903. The account cannot identify the first-ever bearer or connect another household to this family.

The linguistic formation could be repeated wherever an ancestor bore the name Nazarbay. The sources here do not establish how many independent lines exist. For your own research, the question is which records connect successive generations, rather than whether a famous biography contains a familiar surname.

Nazarbaev, Nazarbayeva, and Cyrillic Searches

Search Nazarbayev and Nazarbaev as alternative Latin renderings of Назарбаев. For the feminine form Назарбаева, include Nazarbayeva and Nazarbaeva. These follow the transcription and gender patterns described by Utne; the official biography also uses Alzhan Nazarbayeva. Compare the naming guide and the biography.

Keep these distinctions in your notes:

  • A change between Nazarbaev and Nazarbayev may reflect romanization. Compare the original Cyrillic before treating it as a legal name change.
  • Nazarbayeva is a feminine surname form. Its spelling alone does not identify a woman’s husband, parents, or birth surname.
  • Nazarbay is the underlying personal name. Do not automatically merge a record under this name with a Nazarbayev surname record.

A match becomes stronger when the birth date, spouse, parents, and residence also agree. Our guide to related surname spellings explains how to record a proposed match without prematurely combining people.

Researching a Nazarbayev Family

Begin with a named person and a locality, since broad searches can be overwhelmed by material about the public figure. No national surname count or worldwide ranking is given here: the sources used for this entry do not provide a verified census measure for all these spellings together.

1. Copy the complete name from the document. Preserve Cyrillic, the Latin spelling, and the labels for each name field. A patronymic is useful evidence about a father, but should not be silently entered as the hereditary surname. See given names and surnames in records. 2. Build a dated household sequence. Start with available birth, marriage, and death records; record parents and spouses exactly as written. Then investigate relevant school, employment, or military records to test continuity. Availability depends on the institution and period; a promising record type is not a guarantee that a file survives. 3. Search both scripts and gendered forms. Keep a search log showing the spelling, index, date range, and result. Add a locality or known relative to separate your household from news and institutional references to Nursultan Nazarbayev. 4. Ask an archive a specific question. Supply the settlement and district as recorded at the time, approximate dates, full name, and event or institution. Kazakhstan’s e-government portal describes a service for archival certificates, copies, and extracts through national, central, and local state archives. Its possible outcomes include a referral or a response that the requested material is not held. See the official archival service page in Kazakh. 5. Document any transition in the family name. If an earlier record uses Nazarbay or another form, look for a record that explicitly links the identities, supported by the same relatives and chronology. Similar meaning or spelling is insufficient on its own.

Use the surname evidence checklist to separate what a document actually states from your interpretation. The Kazakh surname guide gives the broader naming context. The etymology can explain a surname’s construction; it cannot replace the chain of records establishing a family line, ethnicity, or ancestral home.
