Besnik is an Albanian masculine given name meaning “faithful” or “loyal”. It uses the Albanian adjective besnik, rather than a translation imported from another language. Meaning and the Connection with Besë
The ordinary adjective describes someone who keeps a commitment or remains loyal to another person or cause. It can also describe something that accurately follows an original, such as a faithful translation. Those dictionary senses explain the name's conventional meaning; they do not predict a bearer's character. Compare the Albanian dictionary entry for *besnik*, adjective senses 1–2.
Linguist Fatma Shijaku places besnik among words derived from besë, whose definite form is besa. The noun has several contextual meanings, including a pledge, word of honour, trust, and faith. Besnik therefore draws on the vocabulary of fidelity: “faithful” is the direct explanation of the adjective, while “pledge” explains its underlying word family. Shijaku, 2025, pp. 203–205.
Shijaku also discusses the cultural importance of besa in promises, customary obligations, and Albanian proverbs, and explicitly identifies Besnik as a boys' name. That context helps explain its resonance without turning the name into a statement of religious affiliation. Neither the English gloss “faithful” nor the Albanian root establishes a particular person's beliefs.
Documented Use
Modern biographies provide concrete evidence of the name in use. Publisher Botimet Toena records the Albanian writer Besnik Mustafaj as born in Bajram Curri on 23 September 1958. This is an example of a real bearer from the mid-twentieth century, not a legendary character or a proposed first Besnik. Toena's author biography.
For Kosovo, a biography hosted by the University of Warsaw's Centre for Europe records economist Besnik Bislimi as born in Bukovik, Gjilan, on 19 May 1971. Together, these examples document use in Albania and Kosovo; they do not date the name's creation. Read the Bislimi biography.
The 2019 official Albanian–Serbian names catalogue also includes Besnik in its masculine given-name list. Its material was collected with civil registry offices in six municipalities in Serbia. This provides evidence of administrative use beyond Albania and Kosovo. Despite the catalogue's title, its alphabetical entries do not supply birth counts or a popularity ranking. Related Forms and Other Albanian Names
Besim belongs to the same lexical family, and Behind the Name groups it with Besnik. It is a distinct given-name form, not simply Besnik with an alternative spelling. Besa is also used as a feminine personal name, as Shijaku notes. Sharing a root does not make either name an automatic nickname for Besnik. Compare the name reference and Shijaku, pp. 204–205.
In ordinary Albanian grammar, besnike occurs as a feminine adjective, for example when describing a faithful woman. A grammatical form in a sentence should not automatically be interpreted as a person's registered name. See the dictionary's examples.

Spelling and Finding Records
The official catalogue pairs Albanian Besnik with Serbian Cyrillic Бесник. The Cyrillic form represents the same name in another writing system; it does not establish a separate Serbian linguistic origin. Catalogue, p. 14.
For searches involving both scripts, try each documented form. Besnik itself contains no diacritic, so the ë in besë should not be inserted into it. Preserve the original spelling when transcribing a record, and compare dates, places, and relatives before joining results.
In Besnik Mustafaj, Besnik is the given name. If an index places it in a surname field, check the original headings and name order. The given name's meaning does not establish a hereditary surname or a family connection between its bearers.
